Opportunties with Artefact

WHO WE ARE

We are a bunch of people who like the idea of making high quality art accessible on the high street and who are happy to contribute some time on a semi-voluntary basis. We believe in organising in a co- operative and non-capitalist way, for the benefit of the wider community.

Over the past few years we have haphazardly transitioned from a café to become an artist-run, co-operatively managed gallery and event space, showcasing artists, and giving the local community a place to hold events and meetings, engaging them with the art world.

Alongside our exhibition programme we facilitate spoken word, poetry, comedy and contemporary music events, and host environmental and political groups as well as gaming nights, workshops and book clubs.

OUR PLANS

We are looking to expand our membership and create a larger team of people who can contribute to developing and improving the scope and sustainability of Artefact. We are looking for people who can further our artistic, political and community aims, come up with and run events, and help make Artefact a viable and sustainable community-focused organisation.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

All types of people are welcome, not just artists but also those interested in other types of community engagement and learning. It is our hope that people will feel enfranchised and committed to the organisation and its aims. We expect that full members would be available to help out anywhere from one to ten days a month depending on availability. Everyone would be involved with every aspect of the organisation, including but not limited to the following:

• Help co-ordinate the art programme

• Come up with and run/facilitate events

• Work behind the bar/be our info point

• Admin/ordering/finances/payroll

• Social media/emails/website/promotion

• Help maintain the space: cafe/bar,

gallery, install shows etc.

• Contribute to funding applications

• Manage and enhance/encourage the community membership

Central to all aspects of working with us is a commitment to the aims of Artefact, the co- operative aims and investment in the place.

OUR STRUCTURE

There are two separate but linked co- operatives that operate from the premises. It is expected that most people would join both (subject to a 3-month mutual probationary period).

ARTEFACT (STIRCHLEY) LTD is a worker co-op that manages the premises and retail side of things.

ARTEFACT PROJECTS LTD is a multi- stakeholder co-op that runs the art programme and enables us to apply for funding separately from the retail side of the organisation.

For more information on the specific nature of our co-ops visit: www.uk.coop/about/what-co-operative

FINANCES

We still rely on people donating time to us on a voluntary basis, but we do believe that with more events and our co- operative management structure, there is the potential to make more money without any bosses. However, for now it is best to see participation as being part of a labour of love. The money earned through Artefact (Stirchley) Ltd is used to pay our operating expenses and finance the art programme, with the excess distributed on a monthly basis to those people who have participated in the day to day running of the premises.

In essence, the financial structure is as follows:

ARTEFACT (STIRCHLEY) LTD runs the premises and bar with any profit made from them distributed amongst its members.

ARTEFACT PROJECTS LTD is voluntary, but with the possibility of paid employment through funding.

BENEFITS

Every member of the organisation will benefit from being able to use the premises for their own events/activities, as well as gaining experience in helping to run a fledgling community arts organisation and becoming involved with the wider Birmingham arts scene.

All members have voting rights and will contribute to the artistic programme and direction of the space, and be part of our exciting plans to develop and improve both the physical space and the scope of Artefact in the next couple of years.

We also offer full members very generous discounts on what we sell.

HOW TO APPLY

Please send us a CV and covering letter as a PDF, outlining how you think you can contribute to the organisation and speci-fying those areas in which you think your contribution would be most useful, with reference to the above list.

We are open to applications until Sunday 15th of March and we hope that most people would be able to join us sometime by the end of March/early April.

We will have an open evening on Tuesday 3rd of March for people to come and see the place and ask questions, but feel free to pop in for an informal look around and chat anytime.
